There’s one thing I’ve always admired about Russian couples: their love for adventure. Whenever I receive a wedding inquiry from a Russian couple, I know I’m in for something unforgettable—and Irina and Nikolay were no exception. These two flew all the way from Moscow to plan a hot air balloon wedding here in Las Vegas!

Irina first contacted me after I had the pleasure of planning her friends Leyla and Anatoly’s wedding. She and Nikolay originally envisioned a hot air balloon wedding flying over the Grand Canyon. However, due to safety regulations, no such tours exist. So, we pivoted and began exploring local options. I hadn’t planned a balloon wedding before, so I dove into research to make sure we found the perfect experience.

After weighing a few possibilities, we opted to build a custom hot air balloon wedding a la carte. I reached out to Vegas Balloon Rides to book a private basket just for their group. Then we assembled a stellar vendor team: XOXO, Jamelle signed on to officiate, Edina Dibusz with Images by Edi captured the magic through her lens, and Luz Tocker of LuzsBlooms created stunning floral arrangements for the couple and their guests. To complete the look, Sergio Daae worked his magic with bridal hair and makeup—Irina looked absolutely radiant.

Since sunset flights weren’t available, we planned a breathtaking sunrise hot air balloon wedding instead. At 6 a.m., we met at the designated check-in point. While the pilots kept a close eye on weather conditions, Irina and Nikolay made the most of the quiet morning by taking pre-ceremony photos. By sheer luck, there was a hot air balloon festival happening that same day! Edina took them on a quick photo tour among the other balloons, capturing vibrant and playful moments. Despite the early chill, the couple looked incredible—and their photos were nothing short of magical.

When Plans Fall, Love Lifts: A Hot Air Balloon Wedding That Stayed Grounded—But Magical

A few hours later, the weather took a turn, and unfortunately, the flight was canceled for safety reasons. Thankfully, the company assured us that the full payment would be refunded. While it was a disappointment, the couple handled the change with grace and stayed in good spirits.

We quickly shifted gears and began brainstorming backup ceremony locations. Just as we were exploring options, a representative from Vegas Balloon Rides made an unexpected offer: to hold the ceremony inside the hot air balloon, right there on the ground. At first, the idea sounded a little odd—but it started to feel like the perfect twist. After all, the couple had dreamed of a hot air balloon wedding, and keeping that vision alive meant everything to them.

Nikolay, in particular, was relieved. It turns out he wasn’t the biggest fan of heights, and had only agreed to go up to make Irina happy. (How sweet is that?)
